Female participation reached 31% of total registered numbers in Football Far North Coast, comparing very favourably with the Northern NSW Football result of 26% and the National average of 24% (based on 2022 data).
An extraordinary number of 2580 females registered in roles including as a player, match official, team official or volunteer in season 2023, painting a bright picture for football in the region and giving further optimism that football is progressing.
There were 117 female teams (42 women’s league, 31 junior girls, and 44 Girls MiniRoos teams) that participated in 2023, evidencing the wonderful efforts of local clubs and the growing support generally for female football. FFNC applauds the commitment at all levels of the game to see female football continue its upward trajectory, becoming more accessible to everyone, breaking down historical barriers and setting new standards of engagement. Byron Bay FC (Girls 12s and Girls 14s) and Tintenbar East Ballina FC (Girls 14s) sent teams to compete in the NNSWF Champion of Champions tournament in early October, demonstrating the talent and enthusiasm of young female players from Football Far North Coast.
Nationally, the Matildas have made a significant impact on female players, and their impressive run to the semi-final stage of the FIFA World Cup 2023 held in Australia and New Zealand is sure to inspire many more young girls to follow in the footsteps of players who are now household names and each being new heroes for girls and boys alike.
Opportunities are increasingly available to recognise the role of females in the game and we highlight the Women in Football Scholarship Program. To apply for one of these scholarships, please CLICK HERE. For more information, please contact Helen Moseley, NNSWF Legacy Officer
