Newcastle Jets captains want MiniRoos to bring a mate!

March 31st, 2021

Newcastle Jets captains Nigel Boogaard and Gema Simon have encouraged MiniRoos to invite a mate to play with them at their club this season.

The 2021 season promises to be the biggest yet across northern NSW with teams preparing for kick-off in late April and early May.

MiniRoos is a modified version of football for kids aged from 4 to 11-years-old that runs nationally. It is designed specifically for children who have different developmental characteristics and social needs from adults.

Enjoyment and freedom of expression are key to the MiniRoos’ philosophy through playing the game with limited emphasis on coaching. It is all about the children.

Northern NSW Football Head of Football Development Peter Haynes said playing MiniRoos was fun, healthy, safe and great value for money.

Jets A-League captain Nigel Boogaard.

“MiniRoos is accessible for all because it really is aimed at kids of all abilities, not just the most talented kids,” Haynes said.

“Kids are much more likely to enjoy their football experience with the removal of the emphasis on winning. They can just enjoy playing the game.

“The smaller fields and simplified rules lead to more fun and enjoyment, more playing time and involvement, far more repeated touches of the ball for all players on the field and more time spent being active.”

Haynes said he hoped already registered MiniRoos players would invite a friend to play the world’s biggest sport with them this season.

“This year is a great opportunity to invite along a friend who may not have had the chance to play football before,” Haynes said.

“Clubs are keen to have you and it is a great way to make other friends and get active.

“Football is the biggest and best sport in the world and one of the reasons for that is how inclusive it is. Anyone can play.”

Parents are encouraged to use the NSW government’s Active Kids Voucher to help cover their child’s registration.

Clubs have until 9 April to enter teams for 2021. So be quick and tell your mates so they don’t miss out!
