Regional tour kicks up a Storm

August 14th, 2017

Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) ALDI MiniRoos Development Officer, Tom Oldaker spent the week on the road last week visiting North Coast Football (NCF) and Football Far North Coast (FFNC) which ended with a match day visit to Northern Storm from NCF.

During his trip, Oldaker visited NCF clubs Nambucca Heads and Boambee FC and FFNC clubs Casino RSM Cobras FC and Shores United SC delivering two types of ALDI MiniRoos workshops, one for coaches of U6-8 and one for U9-11 teams.

“The objective of the workshops were to give coaches within that age group a better understanding of how an ALDI MiniRoos session should be delivered and what outcomes the coach should be looking to achieve,” Oldaker said.

Both workshops identified how coaches can start practices quickly and fully engage players.

The focus of the U6-8 ALDI MiniRoos workshop was the use of animation and storytelling to turn basic football practices into fun games. One of the practices involved players working in pairs and passing the ball to each other which was reanimated so the players were superheroes who had to fire their super power to their team mate. “This is a very basic practice and players would become disengaged very quickly although by animating the practice where the players were superheroes meant the players had lots of fun while practicing a fundamental football skill,” Oldaker said.

The focus of the U9-11 ALDI MiniRoos workshop was to use the coaching process principle of CHANGE IT to achieve the session objective by making the practice easier or more challenging.

The trip was a massive success with 35 coaches attending the workshops across the 4 clubs. “It was great to see so many coaches take advantage of the opportunity and the feedback from the clubs and coaches was all positive,” Oldaker concluded.

Due to its success, NSWF will continue to deliver ALDI MiniRoos workshops during season 2018.

NNSWF would like to thank representatives of Nambucca Heads, Boambee FC, Casino RSM Cobras FC and Shores United SC for arranging the workshops and encouraging their coaches to attend.
