Final day of Champion of Champions sees best of region’s Girls’ community teams
On the final day of the Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) Champion of Champions tournament, the best 14 and 16 Years Girls’ community teams battled it out in a damp, but entertaining day of football.
The 14 Years competition saw Bellingen FC take out the top honours as winners after defeating Sawtell FC in the Final, in an incredible penalty shootout featuring 10 rounds of spot-kicks to decide a winner after it was 1-1 at full-time. Also named Champion of Champions was Kootingal FC in the 16 Years age group after a 2-1 win over Western Phoenix in their Final.
Sawtell FC were the dominant side all day and won in every game of the group stage while Dudley Redhead United FC finished just short of the Final as they trailed the second-place Bellingen FC side only on goal difference. They ended up finishing in fourth place though after going down to Nimbin Headers SC 2-1 in the 3rd v 4th Playoff.
In the 16 Years competition, the two teams who spent the groups undefeated, Western Phoenix and Kootingal FC, met in a great Final, but there was terrific football displayed right across the day including a great 3rd and 4th Playoff match between Boambee FC and Warners Bay, with the former winning 2-0, while Uki Pythons beat Maitland JFC in the 5th v 6th Playoff, 4-1.
NNSWF Football Events and Operations Coordinator Annalisa Ceccato said that despite the impending forecast of torrential rain forcing the competition’s schedule to change, the 14 and 16 Years teams put on a great show.
“Unfortunately due to the expected wet weather that was forecast, the change was made to move the Girls 14 and 16 Years competitions to take place on the one day as it would have been disappointing for players, parents and officials to have their games called off on Saturday and Sunday and therefore miss out on playing games and have no winner crowned,” Ceccato said.
“The teams showcased some brilliant football today and although there will be some tired legs tonight, I’m sure they would have enjoyed their time playing at the C.ex International Stadium against the best other community teams from across the region.”
The Referee of the Tournament was also awarded to Football Mid North Coast official, William Sawyer.
Day Five – Thursday
15 & 16 Years Boys Champion of Champions crowned on Day 5
In perfect football conditions, Day 5 of the tournament saw the conclusion of the 15 and 16 Years Boys competition as the community teams battled it out in the Semi-Finals and Finals with North Companions (Northern Inland Football) named winners in the 15 Years, and Alstonville FC (Football Far North Coast) in 16 Years.
After topping the round-robin table, Bellingen FC (Football Mid North Coast) worked their way past Mayfield United (Newcastle Football) in the Semi-Finals, but fell just short against North Companions in the Final, who defeated Maitland JFC (Hunter Valley Football) in the earlier stage.
North Companions’ second-half goals to Will Albertson proved to be the difference as they were named the 15 Years Boys Champion of Champions with a 2-0 win.
In the 16 Years competition, Port FC (Football Mid North Coast) managed to scrape through to the final match after collecting a 1-1 draw against Bolwarra Lorn JSC (Hunter Valley Football) to retain their second place, and they met Football Far North Coast’s Alstonville FC who finished the round-robin stage on top of the table.
The Final was a enthralling, back-and-forth battle, but an extremely early goal to Alstonville’s Sam Green gave them the advantage and in the second half they were able to hold out and add a second, courtesy of Stuart King, to finish their campaign as Champions.
NNSWF Football Events and Operations Coordinator Annalisa Ceccato said it was a brilliant final day of football in the 15 and 16 Years age groups.
“The 15s and 16s age groups Finals were really exciting matches capping off what has been three great days of football,” Ceccato said.
“It’s wonderful to be able have teams from various regions congregating at tournaments like this and hopefully for these players it’s been a rewarding way to finish their 2019 seasons.”
Day Six of the tournament will see the Girls 14 Years and 16 Years competitions take place. Due to the ominous wet weather coming, the Girls competition games will ALL be played on Friday. The first match kicks-off at 9am.
Day Four – Wednesday
Leaders arise across Champion of Champions 15 and 16 Years competition
The second and main day of the 15 and 16 Years Champion of Champions competitions saw leading community teams from across Northern NSW arise in contention for a spot in tomorrow’s Finals.
Some highly competitive football was showcased in the 15 Years competition with tight score-lines being played out between all five sides.
Maitland JFC (Hunter Valley Football) and Bellingen FC (North Coast Football) both finished the day in equal-top spot after collecting two wins and a draw, with the latter just edging out first on goal difference. North Companions (Northern Inland Football) will now meet Bellingen in Semi-Finals after taking out third spot, while in fourth finished Mayfield United FC (Newcastle Football).
After contesting a hard-fought 1-1 draw yesterday afternoon, both Alstonville FC (Football Far North Coast) and Port FC (Football Mid North Coast) continued to shine in the 16 Years competition and won all three of their matches to finish the day at the top of the table.
2018 Champions and Hunter Valley Football’s Bolwarra Lorn JSC are still in contention for a spot in the Final though trailing the top two by just one point and have a match against Port FC tomorrow which will ultimately decide the final two combatants as the other three sides all flounder too far behind.
NNSWF Football Events and Operations Coordinator Annalisa Ceccato highlighted her excitement and anticipation for the conclusion of what’s been a tight 15 and 16 Years competition.
“Today’s action was highly entertaining and the results have set up what should be a great final day in the 15 and 16 Years competitions,” Ceccato said.
“Most of the matches were tightly contested with some high-quality and competitive play being showcased. Tomorrow’s Semi-Finals and Finals will hopefully be much more of the same.”
Day Five of the tournament concludes the 15 and 16 Years competitions tomorrow with the first match kicking-off at 9am with the Finals to be played at 12:00pm (16 Years) and 1:00pm (15 Years).
Day Three – Tuesday (15 & 16 Years)
15 and 16 Years Boys Kick-Off Their Champion of Champions Campaign This Afternoon
This afternoon the best in 15 and 16 Years community teams from across the Northern NSW region descended upon Coffs Harbour to kick-off their Champion of Champions campaign.
The 16 Years division played one round of their competition today, with all teams getting their first taste of playing at the C.ex International Stadium.
Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) Football Events and Operations Coordinator Annalisa Ceccato, spoke highly of the first round of matches with all teams showing a high level of talent.
“It’s great to see our community teams from near and far come together and show off their skills at the fantastic upgraded C.ex International Stadium here in Coffs Harbour.”
Charlestown JFC (Macquarie Football) and 2018 Champions Bolwarra Lorn JSC (Hunter Valley Football) gained first round victories.
Alstonville FC and Port FC shared the spoils with a 1 all draw.
The 15 Years division has Maitland topping the table after playing two rounds (2) this afternoon with a 2-1 win over Macleay Valley Rangers FC and a 1 all draw with Bellingen FC.
Day four (4) of the tournament continues tomorrow with the first match kicking-off at 9am.
Day Three – Tuesday (12, 13 & 14 Years)
After a foggy start to the third day of the Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) Champion of Champions, the 12, 13 and 14 Years Boys Finals were played with the winning teams crowned at C.ex International Stadium, Coffs Harbour.
The 12 Years division saw Kahibah FC (Macquarie Football) win the Final 2- 0 against Byron Bay FC (Football Far North Coast).
Kahibah FC played an excellent game of football, scoring crucial goals on either side of half-time.
While Byron Bay FC played strongly throughout the tournament, it was Kahibah FC who remained undefeated that took the Champion of Champions title home.
The 13 Years began their day with the top four (4) teams playing off in semi-finals to secure a place in the Final.
Alstonville FC (Football Far North Coast) defeated Valentine FC 2-1 and Coffs City United FC (North Coast Football) defeated Iona FC 2-1.
The Final between the two leading teams saw Coffs City United FC dominating 2-0 at half-time.
During a tight second half, Alstonville FC made a comeback slotting two (2) goals in the final five minutes equalising the game.
After an intense penalty shoot-out, Alstonville FC took it home and claimed the 13 Years 2019 Champion of Champions title.
Starting the day off with a 5-0 win over Port United FC (Mid North Coast Football), the 14 Years Morisset Strikers (Macquarie Football) continued their campaign into the Final against Northern Storm (North Coast Football).
Morisset struck first with an early goal in the third minute, followed by a second just before half time.
Northern Storm could not get on the score board, with a final score of 3-0 to Morisset Strikers after a cracking final goal in the second half.
Morisset Strikers remained undefeated throughout their campaign, making the team the new 14 Years 2019 Champion of Champions.
Day three (3) of the tournament continues this afternoon with the 15 and 16 Years Boys beginning their campaign from 3pm.
Day Two – Monday
A Scorcher Of A Day Has Seen The Competition Heat Up But Games Delayed
A scorcher of a day has delayed matches but seen the competition heat up as the Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) Champion of Champions tournament approaches the Finals.
NNSWF Development Officer Annelise Rosnell, has applauded the efforts of players, coaches and referees for managing the heat and remaining focused on the tournament.
“All teams rose to the occasion of playing hard to secure a spot in the semi-finals and finals tomorrow,”
“The level of involvement and passion seen from the community teams has been inspiring” Rosnell concluded.
In the 12 Years, Kahibah FC (Macquarie Football) are currently in the lead heading into the final round of fixtures scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Maitland JFC (Hunter Valley Football) and Byron Bay FC (Football Far North Coast) have both been impressive in front of goal scoring 24 and 20 respectively.
The two teams will challenge each other at 10am tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to the Final.
The 13 Years semi-finals have been determined with Alstonville FC (Football Far North Coast) taking on Valentine FC (Macquarie) and Coffs City United FC (North Coast Football) facing off against Iona FC (Mid North Coast).
Alstonville FC finished four (4) points clear of Coffs City United FC and Iona FC, who finished second and third respectively.
Leaders in the 14 Years division, Morisset Strikers (Macquarie Football) and Northern Storm (North Coast), have locked in their place in tomorrow’s Final.
After a thrilling match where Morisset came from one (1) goal behind to claim a 2-1 win over Northern Storm, they’ve now gained maximum points from their opening four (4) round matches.
Due to the hot weather, matches scheduled at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm were postponed until after 3pm, in accordance with the NNSWF hot weather policy.
The final round of the 14 Years matches have been rescheduled to Tuesday 8 October at 8am, kicking off Day three (3) of the NNSWF Champion of Champions tournament.
Day One – Sunday
Zone Community Champions Take The Field For the Coveted Title
Day One of the Northern NSW Football (NNSWF) Champion of Champions begins with the top performing 12, 13 and 14 Years community boys teams from across the region competing at the C.ex International Stadium, Coffs Harbour.
The tournament gives participants a chance to play against other top performing community teams from across the seven (7) community member zone competitions.
In its second year of operation, Champion of Champions affords participants the chance to play in competitive tournament format conditions.
Today we saw a standout performance from Kahibah FC (Macquarie Football) in the 12 Years, who have taken command after defeating the earlier frontrunner Maitland JFC (Hunter Valley Football) 4-1 in the third round of the tournament.
Iona FC (Football Mid North Coast) leads the way in the 13 Years division remaining undefeated in their three (3) matches played today.
In the 14 Years division Morisset FC (Macquarie Football) and Northern Storm (North Coast Football) have shown early form in their opening round matches gaining maximum points from their two (2) fixtures.
The fourth round fixture at 1:00pm tomorrow between the two title contending teams is shaping to be a decisive match.
NNSWF Development Officer, Annelise Rosnell has praised the efforts from the Member Zones for achieving an increase in the amount of teams participating in this year’s tournament.
“It’s fantastic to see the tournament grow by a substantial amount in its second year,”
“We have seen an increase of 13 teams, with this year being the first year of a Girls competition.”
Day two (2) of the tournament commences Monday 7 October, with first kick off at 9:00am.
