An amendment made relevant to Law 4 in the IFAB (an independent body that determines the regulations for the gameplay of football) Laws of the Game.
Law 4 (which relates to The Players’ Equipment) and more specifically Clause 4.2 now outline the following relevant to compulsory equipment:
The team captain must wear the armband issued or authorised by the relevant competition organiser, or a single-coloured armband that may also have the word ‘captain’ or the letter ‘C’ or a translation thereof, which should also be a single colour (see also ‘General modifications’).
What does this mean for competition teams (ages 12-senior) in FFNC?
The captain must wear an armband which is simple and conforms to the requirements of Law 4 relating to slogans, statements, images and advertising. It may be issued or authorised by the competition organiser.
FFNC distributed captain’s armbands to each club at the Clubs Forum in February, relevant to the number of teams each club had in 2024.
The referee’s responsibility in this space primarily involves ensuring that each Team Captain is identified by wearing an armband, which ordinarily means that ONE player on each team and who must be one of their own players on the field of play, is wearing a captain’s armband to signify that they are the nominated team captain.
Role of the Team Captain
Law 3.10 of the Laws of the Game specify the following:
The team captain has no special status or privileges but has a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team.
