Lismore Thistles SC to fly the flag at FIFA Women’s World Cup

June 2nd, 2023

Lismore Thistles Soccer Club has been selected as one of six clubs from the more than 230 clubs across Northern NSW to be involved with the 2023 Women’s Football World Cup in August.

The announcement came to coincide with Female Football Week that was celebrated between Friday 19 May and Sunday 28 May.

Lismore Thistles Publicity and Social Media Officer Corinne Milgate nominated Thistles and was absolutely thrilled to receive the news, saying, “This is such an amazing opportunity for our young female players to be involved and I thank Northern NSW Football for the opportunity”.

Lismore Thistles has chosen the six female players who will be invited to participate in this extraordinary opportunity through an expression of interest process.

The positive and inclusive attitude of the Lismore Thistles Female players is inspiring, with themes being expressed such as encouraging others, contributing to the needs of the team, and recognising that participation is always more important than winning.

With a group of such wonderful young females to choose from, it was a tough decision to formulate the selection criteria and the subsequent decision of who goes to the event.

“We get to travel to Sydney and will be flag bearers for a Quarter Final at Accor Stadium in August. To see the best players in the world will be so much fun.”

Each offer includes 12 admission / grandstand tickets (one for each flag bearer plus parent chaperone) and a uniform will be supplied by FIFA for each flag bearer.

The countdown to the first ever Football World Cup to be hosted by Australia continues, with less than sixty days until the World Game showcases the very best female players between Thursday, 20 July to Sun, 20 August.

The USA are the current World Cup Champions and co-host country (with New Zealand), Australia, are ranked tenth.

The biggest cheers will be for the Matildas and of course Sam Kerr, but the opportunity to watch so many superstars in action, will entertain, amaze and thrill, so the message is, ‘Get in quickly and purchase a ticket’, with several matches (including a quarterfinal) to be played in Brisbane.

Football Far North Coast General Manager Steve Mackney predicts that female participation, that is about 31% of the almost 6800 players locally this season, will increase exponentially next year and beyond, as a consequence of the global tournament being held in Australia and New Zealand.

‘Female football continues to gain momentum and the chance to promote the game for all ages, genders and abilities, will be given more profile as the eyes of the world are focused on this World Cup tournament.’ Mackney says.

“Congratulations to Lismore Thistles, well done to Corinne for her efforts and thanks to everyone who contributes to making community sport such a purposeful activity for the community.” Mackney concluded.
